Bitmain 860T U3S21EXPH Miner Operation Solution

Efficient Cooling & Power Optimization

During the Token 2049 event on September 19, 2024, Bitmain unveiled the U3S21EXPH, boasting an impressive 860TH/s , the highest for a single miner. It’s Bitmain’s first machine to feature a 3U server design and will be available for delivery in the second quarter of 2025. We were honored to participate in early prototype testing, installing the first units for a client. Curious about cooling such a powerful machine? We’ll share our experience and insights from this unique project.

How We Installed and Operated the U3S21EXPH

The Bitmain U3S21EXPH, launched at the Token 2049 event, is Bitmain’s latest miner with an impressive 860TH/s capacity. As it’s so new, Bitmain hasn’t yet developed racks for large-scale testing. We designed a solution based on the WhatsMiner M63S+, adapting an HPC liquid cooling rack for the 3U form factor of the U3S21EXPH. Each rack holds 16 units, and we customized and upgraded the manifold to handle the 20L/min flow rate required for each machine.

Rack Design:

To accommodate the unique size and power demands of the U3S21EXPH, we used an HPC liquid-cooled rack customized to the 3U form factor, ensuring efficient cooling. Each rack holds 14 U3S21EXPH units, and the manifold was upgraded to meet the required flow rate of 20L per minute for each miner, ensuring optimal cooling and performance.

Power Distribution:

Unlike traditional miners, the U3S21EXPH consumes 12KW per unit, making it impossible to simply plug into standard outlets. We custom-built high-power PDUs for the racks, each equipped with a leakage protection switch for enhanced safety. Additionally, we recommend installing a main circuit breaker for each rack to simplify maintenance and repairs. For safety and convenience, external cables are fed into the PDUs from the top, ensuring a clean and organized setup.

Liquid Cooling System:

Given the customer’s location, where the climate remains cool year-round and water resources are scarce, we opted for dry cooling towers. This solution not only reduces overall operating costs but also conserves water. The cooling capacity of the dry towers was customized based on the number of racks, and all piping was connected via on-site welding to ensure a completely leak-proof and pressure-stable system.

Network System:

Unlike other miners, the U3S21EXPH test version comes with two Ethernet ports per unit, and we estimate the official version might have three. To accommodate this, we customized strip switches, mounted on the left side of the rack for a clean and organized appearance. This design also makes it easier to connect to upper-layer management switches, streamlining the entire setup and ensuring efficient network management.
